As a true freshman at Oklahoma in 2017, Sermon played in all 14 games and made three starts. He finished the season with 744 yards on 121 carries with five touchdowns. In his 2018 sophomore season, Sermon rushed for 947 yards on 164 carries and scored 13 touchdowns. As a junior in 2019, he played in nine games and had 54 carries for 385 yards and four touchdowns.
Sermon transferred to Ohio State University for his senior season in 2020. In the abbreviated season in 2020, Sermon appeared in 8 games and totaled 965 total yards on 128 touches. He scored 4 times all on the ground. His 2020 season was highlighted by a 29 carry 331 yard effort verses Northwestern and a 31 carry 193 yard effort against Clemson in the 2021 Sugar Bowl. The following week in National Championship, Sermon left early with injury and was limited to 1 carry for 2 yards.
The Trey Sermon Fantasy Football outlook, according to the RotoHeat staff that reviewed him, is a mixed bag. His biggest area of concern seems to be a lack of burst and top end speed. Sermon is expected to be a mid-round prospect. Sermon has the physicality, balance, ball security, and toughness to be an early-down back and shoulder the majority of the load for his NFL team should he be given the opportunity.
