2023 NFL Week 8 IDP Waiver Wire Adds
Last week was not as great as I hope for on these waiver additions. We started off in fantastic fashion with Grover Stewart being suspended six games for PEDs, and his backups (Taven Bryan and Eric Johnson II) getting 1 solo tackle combined. Leonard Floyd and AJ Epenesa did nothing despite a good matchup. Bradley Chubb had a big game, as did Jabrill Peppers. JC Jackson had a good game in terms of what we want from a cornerback, and a few players haven’t played yet. Perhaps I am too hard on myself, let me know what you think.
These waiver additions are mainly redraft-focused and looking at deeper leagues; if you have questions for shallow leagues, where you start 2 DL/2 LB/2 DB many of these are likely a bit deeper than you need. All statistics are courtesy of Pro Football Reference unless otherwise noted, and the base scoring we go off of you can find here. Please feel free to reach out to us for questions on any specific league; the more info you have the better!
And now, let’s go to a clip.
Bye Weeks: None! Weird, I know, but they don’t have any this week for whatever reason.
2023 NFL Week 8 IDP Waiver Wire Adds – Linebackers
David Mayo, Linebacker, Washington Commanders
Rostered: ESPN .1%, Yahoo 0% Sleeper 2%
Cody Barton left with what is believed to be a high ankle sprain, and while Jamin Davis took over the main role and played 99% of the snaps, David Mayo stepped in an led the team in tackles on only a 60% snap share. David had 9 solos and 2 assists against the Giants and in his 7th year in the league, all with Washington. David has been productive when called upon before and if Cody is out he is worth an add in most leagues.
Luke Masterson, Linebacker, Las Vegas Raiders
Rostered: ESPN .2%, Yahoo 0%, Sleeper 2%
Having only an 18.78% snap share on the year, Luke played 62% of the defensive snaps in Week 7 when Divine Deablo left with an ankle injury. Luke ended with 3 solos, 2 assists, and 1 pass deflection. If Divine is not able to go Luke would be the next man up to take over his role.
It may be diminished a bit from what Divine was playing, and Robert Spillane is the linebacker to own here if available. If Spillane is not available and you need help due to injuries, Luke is worth looking at.
Drue Tranquill, Linebacker, Kansas City Chiefs
Rostered: ESPN 2.2%, Yahoo 8%, Sleeper 13%
Starting stud linebacker Nick Bolton dislocated his wrist and is expected to miss about two months. Drue has filled in for Nick when Nick has missed time already this year; in Week 4 Drue had 8 combined tackles and in Week 9 he had 9 combined tackles. Drue should be a priority add this week.
Willie Gay is another Chiefs linebacker you can look to if you can’t get Tranquill. Willie (62.67%) has played about the same number of snaps this year as Drue (60.37%) but Drue has the better role for production when both are out there, and Drue has done more with less this year.
Damone Clark, Linebacker, Dallas Cowboys
Rostered: ESPN 2.2%, Yahoo 1%, Sleeper 6%
He was mentioned going into Week 6 as a potential add ahead of time given Leighton Vander Esch going on the injured reserve list. Damone had a 99% snap share in Week 6 taking over the middle linebacker spot, and he had 7 solos, 1 assist, and 1 QB hit. The Rams (Week 8 opponent) are middle of the road in terms of a matchup, but any time you can get a middle linebacker that plays a huge snap share off of waivers, it is worth it.
2023 NFL Week 8 IDP Waiver Wire Adds – Defensive Backs
Jonathan Owens, Safety, Green Bay Packers
Rostered: ESPN .5%, Yahoo 1%, Sleeper 8%
Each game this year when Darnell Savage has been injured (Week 5 and Week 7), Jonathan has come in for him in relief. Jonathan had 48% and 54% snap shares respectively in those games and had a combined stat line of2 solos, 1 assist, and 1 TFL.
These are not great numbers and he is not likely to put up a huge performance, but he should be on the waiver wire safeties to look to if you need help based on volume of snaps. Darnell Savage is unlikely to play in Week 8 against the Vikings given that his Week 7 injury was a reaggravation of his Week 5 injury.
PJ Locke, Safety, Denver Broncos
Rostered: ESPN 0%, Yahoo 0%, Sleeper 0%
This is pure speculation based on what we have seen in a limited sample size. Starting safety Kareem Jackson was ejected in the second half of the game against the Packers. This was Kareem’s third ejection this season, and he has already been four times this year for illegal hits. I am guessing that he finally gets suspended. Edit: Ok, this didn’t get published when I thought it would. He did get suspended.
PJ came in for Kareem and had the game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter. PJ played in 11 snaps prior to yesterday when he played 15. It could end up being someone else, but with Kareem suspended, PJ looks like the next guy up with the info we have.
Tre’von Moehrig, Safety, Las Vegas Raiders
Rostered: ESPN 2.4%, Yahoo 3%, Sleeper 3%
Tre’von has been playing much better from an IDP perspective than he did in his first two years. In 2021 he had 55 combined tackles, 6 pass deflections, and 1 interception. In 2022 he had 55 combined tackles, 5 pass deflections, and 2 TFL. In 2023 he already has 36 combined tackles, 4 pass deflections, 2 interceptions, and 1 sack.
He has a 100% snap share in every game this year outside of Week 1 (92%). The Raiders have three games in their next four with opponents in the top four in points allowed to opposing safeties (Detroit Week 8, Giants Week 9, and Dolphins Week 12).
Steven Nelson, Cornerback, Houston Texans
Rostered: ESPN .2%, Yahoo 0%, Sleeper 0%
The Texans play the Panthers in Week 8, and the Panthers are in the top 3 for tackles allowed to opposing cornerbacks. Steven has a 97.33% snap share on the year and has taken over the top cornerback role for the Texans with Derek Stingley Jr on injured reserve. On the year he has 24 solos, 4 assists, 5 pass deflections, and 3 interceptions.
2023 NFL Week 8 IDP Waiver Wire – Defensive Linemen
Rashan Gary, Edge, Green Bay Packers
Rostered: ESPN 2.2%, Yahoo 1%, Sleeper 13%
Rashan tore an ACL early in November last year and has been brought along slowly thus far. That changed a bit in Week 7 against the Broncos when he played 68% of the team snaps. That was second for edge players behind Preston Smith at 71%.
Despite only playing 34.52% of the snaps, before Week 7 Rashan had more sacks and was tied in quarterback with the rest of the Packers’ edge players combined. Rashan has 7 solos, 5 assists, 4 TFL, 4.5 sacks, and 1 pass deflection on the year. Those numbers are going to be going to be going up as he gets more playing time this year.
Jermaine Johnson II, Defensive End/Edge, New York Jets
Rostered: ESPN .9%, Yahoo 1%, Sleeper 4%
The Jets are coming off a bye and they face the New York Giants in Week 8. In seven games this year the Giants quarterbacks have been sacked 36 times, or about five times a game. Jermaine leads all Jets edge players with a 64.04% snap share to go with 15 solos, 3 assists, 4 TFL, 3 pass deflections, 2 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. This is a great week for those numbers to go up, and Jermaine is a good addition for people needing defensive end or edge help.
Denico Autry, Defensive Lineman, Tennessee Titans
Rostered: ESPN 1.6%, Yahoo 4%, Sleeper 4%
Denico (65.74%) is second behind Jeffery Simmons (88.83%) in defensive lineman snap shares for the Titans; no one else is even in the 40s for the year. The Titans play the Falcons in Week 8, and Atlanta is a top-10 team in tackles allowed to defensive linemen.
With 11 solos, 9 assists, 4 TFL, 4 sacks, and 1 forced fumble, Denico has at least a half sack in 4/6 games. This is a good matchup to see him get another one on top of some tackles.
Osa Odighizuwa, Defensive Tackle, Dallas Cowboys
Rostered: ESPN 1.2%, Yahoo 2%, Sleeper 4%
Osa has not gone below a 50% snap share from Week 2 on, and he hit a 62% snap share in Week 6 before the Cowboys bye week. On the year he has 14 solos, 7 assists, 5 TFL, and 3 sacks. The Rams are 11th in fantasy points to opposing defensive tackles, and Matt Stafford is tied for 8th in sacks taken with 18 this year.
