Anyone that watched Monday night’s pre-season game between the Saints and Jaguars likely feared what we are hearing reported now in regards to Travis Etienne’s injury. The injury could end the rookie’s season before it ever really started. The tough thing with this injury is the timetable to return; typically if there’s no surgery involved, the player could be back on the field in 6 months (or season ending in this case). An interesting article I found is from Dr. David Greier relating to all the Cam Newton injury issues in the past, and this helped me see the time table possibilities.
Adam Schefter is reporting the following news via Twitter:
Let the sadness ensue my friends, as your hopes and dreams of Etienne leading the backfield will have to wait at least one more season. Lucky for you, they have a 2nd year running back that is already a 1,000 rusher in the NFL. I don’t know if you remember James Robinson, the darling of fantasy in 2020 is still on the team, but he looks to be the beneficiary of this injury (though he probably still was going to have a heavy workload regardless of Travis Etienne’s injury news). I know Robinson’s numbers were with the previous regime, but the dude still averaged 4.5 ypc, had 1,070 rushing yards, 7 touchdowns AND added 49 receptions, to the tune of 344 yards and 3 touchdowns in the passing game.
I look at it this way; now that we know that James Robinsons going to see the bulk of the workload, the question that you have to ask yourself is, do they bring in a vet or trust the other touches to Carlos Hyde? I anticipate that the teams rolls with what they have behind Robinson, in Hyde, Dare Ogunbawale and Devine Ozigbo but don’t be surprised if they go searching for a back that can really be a big play threat like Etienne was figuring to be in this offense.
