Streaming is a fantasy football strategy that fantasy managers use when they don’t have starter on their rosters that they trust entering any particular week during the fantasy season. For those that participate in leagues with the kicker position and defense/special teams (DST), this is a fairly common practice. Streaming, however, is not limited to the kicker and DST. At times, fantasy managers can employ this tactic for any of the skilled player positions. Streaming requires league managers to manage their roster and make waiver wire moves weekly.
Matchups are a driving force behind streaming at all positions, and TE is no exception. If you waited until late in your draft to acquire a TE, or dislike a certain matchup, then streaming may very well be your best bet. Each week I will bring you my top 3 weekly streamers at the TE position. The goal is to identify a positive matchup for you to exploit, and as always, win your fantasy matchup.
Prior to the 2020 NFL Season, it appeared as if Blake Jarwin was in line for a major role as the Cowboys’ number 1 option at the tight end position. Jarwin ended up getting injured, thrusting Dalton Schultz into the number one role. Fast forward to the 2021 season and the Cowboys’ tight end position was confusing to fantasy owners. I was unsure if Schultz or Jarwin would serve as the primary option at tight end. Well, after one week, it would appear that Schultz will be utilized more frequently in the passing game.
In Week 1, Dalton Schultz saw 6 targets and turned that into 6 receptions for 45 yards. The Cowboys moved the ball well in Week 1, and streaming tight ends that play in productive offenses is always a good idea. Their Week 2 matchup against the Chargers will have one of the higher projected point totals of the week.
As the pre-season came to an end, Juwan Johnson became a popular add in dynasty leagues. However, he was not a popular choice in our redraft leagues leading up to the season. Johnson is not only a streaming option for Week 2, but he may be a viable option for us all season long.
Johnson saw 3 targets in Week 1 and turned that into 3 receptions, 21 yards, and 2 touchdowns. The Saints will be facing off against the Panthers in Week 2. It’s hard to know how tough the Panthers will be playing opposing tight ends this early, but Jameis seemed to be looking at Juwan Johnson early and often. Johnson appears to be a solid add this week, and he could be useful in Week 2 against Carolina.
Unlike Juwan Johnson, who picked up steam heading into the regular season, I’m not sure most people even knew Jared Cook was on the Chargers for the 2021 season. Cook performed well in his first game as a Charger. Jared Cook received 8 targets and converted those into 5 receptions and 56 yards.
The Chargers will be facing off against a Dallas Cowboys secondary this week that got dominated by Rob Gronkowski and the Tampa offense last week. I am expecting that game to be on the higher-scoring side giving Cook a high-upside opportunity to get in the end zone.
