We asked the RotoHeat community about some Week 2 start or sit matchups that they had a question about. The RotoHeat team then voted to see whom they would rather start or sit in the matchup. Here are the results of those matchups.
*Disclaimer: Start and Sit results are subject to change due to injury reports and other factors leading up to game time.
Week 2 Start or Sit Matchup 1: Raheem Mostert or Todd Gurley or Josh Jacobs or Austin Ekeler
We had to pick one of these four running backs to start. Mostert had 8 votes among the staff, Gurley had 3, Jacobs and Ekeler didn’t receive a vote. The 49ers should be playing with a lead in their game and could rely heavily on the running game. However, Thomas Madsen who voted for Gurley. disagrees, stating “Jets run D is better than people give them credit for. It’s their pass D that’s bad. Sitting Mostert.” Gurley plays Dallas this week after they gave up 2 touchdowns and 79 yards to Malcolm Brown.
Surprisingly, Jacobs didn’t receive a vote after scoring 3 times against Carolina. Oakland will host a good rush defense in New Orleans on Monday night. Ekeler also didn’t receive a vote but the Chargers face off against the Chiefs this week and could abandon the run early.
Week 2 Start or Sit Matchup 2: Aaron Jones or Chris Carson
In this matchup of NFC running backs, Aaron Jones ran away with the votes 8-0. Chris Carson faces off against the New England Patriots which might not be a good matchup for him, even with the players that New England lost in the offseason. The Packers will be competing against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Jones can contribute not just on the ground but in the passing game as well, both of these factors put Jones a little ahead of Carson.
Week 2 Start or Sit Matchup 3: Anthony Miller or James Robinson or Jerry Jeudy
Miller received 8 votes from our staff, Robinson ended at 2 and Jeudy didn’t receive a vote. Jeudy is a rookie that could be without Courtland Sutton again and is going against a good Pittsburgh pass defense. Jacksonville is competing against Tennessee and their tough defense. They could also fall behind early and have to lean on the passing game. Miller and the Bears face the Giants this week and Miller could see an increase in snaps.
Week 2 Start or Sit Matchup 4: Will Fuller or Marvin Jones
Fuller won this matchup 7-2 amongst the RotoHeat staff. Fuller appears to be Watson’s new favorite target in Houston. However, they are playing against one of the best defenses in the NFL in Baltimore on Sunday. Marvin Jones is facing off against the Green Bay Packers. The Packers gave up 110 yards receiving and 2 scores to Adam Thielen in Week 1 and Keeny Golladay appears to be out a second week.
Week 2 Start or Sit Matchup 5: (Pick 2 of) Amari Cooper or Mike Evans or Tyler Lockett or Kenny Golladay
Golladay was ruled out since this question was asked earlier in the week. Amari Cooper is the favorite for us with 9 votes. Thomas Madsen said, “Cowboys v. Falcons should be a total shootout. I’m going with Cooper.” The Cowboys game against Atlanta has the highest projected total of the main slate.
That leaves Tyler Lockett versus New England or Mike Evans against the Carolina Panthers. Evans won out between the two 6-4. Lockett will more than likely have Gilmore covering him on Sunday Night. Kevin Pons likes the matchup for Evans better. He said, “Godwin may miss and they said they felt bad about not using Evans more last week”.
Week 2 Start or Sit Matchup 6: Kyler Murray or Drew Brees
Murray will be playing against Washington on Sunday, and Brees will be traveling to Vegas this week to play on MNF. Murray ran away with this one for us with a vote of 10-0. We liked Murray because not only is he facing off against Washington, but he can score on the ground as well. Drew Brees could also be without his favorite weapon Michael Thomas this week as he is dealing with a high ankle sprain.
Week 2 Start or Sit Question 7: Josh Kelley or Frank Gore or Leonard Fournette
The RotoHeat team voted Josh Kelley as the option we would prefer of the three, with a 5-3-3 result. Josh Kelley would be facing the Chiefs’ porous run defense and splitting time with Austin Ekeler. Frank Gore will be starting with Le’Veon Bell hurt against the 49ers solid run defense. Leonard Fournette is still being eased into the Bucs offense last week and could overtake Ronald Jones at some point.
Week 2 Start or Sit Matchup 8: What to so with Leonard Fournette (start or sit)?
We all decided that we would sit Fournette this week. We would like to see him more involved in the offense before we start him. Fournette played just 12.9% of the snaps in week one. He should see more snaps as he gets more comfortable with the offense.
Week 2 Start or Sit Question 9: Cooper Kupp vs Michael Gallup vs DJ Chark
Cooper Kupp received 8 votes, Michael Gallup had 3 votes and DJ Chark had none. Chark will be facing off against Indianapolis, where he had a good game in week 10 last season. Kupp will be playing the Eagles and trying to rebound from his Week 1 performance against Dallas. Gallup will be lining up against Atlanta in a game that should be a shootout, but he was out targetted by both Cooper and Lamb in Week 1.
Week 2 Start or Sit Question 10: Chris Carson or Raheem Mostert
Carson received 9 votes from the RotoHeat team, compared to Mostert getting 2 votes. Both running backs have tough matchups this week as Seattle is playing New England and San Francisco is going against the Jets. I trust Chris Carson more than Raheem Mostert. The Niners have a couple different running backs they could use, while Carson is the primary back in Seattle.
Week 2 Start or Sit Matchup 11: Zach Moss or Chase Edmonds or Josh Kelley
From the RotoHeat team, Moss was the heavy favorite to start this week 9-1, with Edmonds getting the other vote. Zach Moss will be running against the Miami Dolphins this week, Edmonds has the Washington Football Team and Kelley has the Chiefs. Moss should see a lot of action Sunday, even backing up Singletary, as the Bills could have a decent lead on Miami.
Week 2 Start or Sit Matchup 12: Antonio Gibson or Cam Akers
This was a close and debated one amongst the RotoHeat team. Gibson is favored 6-5 over Akers. Gibson had 9 rushes for 36 yards and a pair of catches against the Eagles. Akers had 14 attempts for 39 yards and 1 reception against Dallas. This week Gibson will see Arizona and Akers has Philadelphia. The Rams also have more competition for Akers in the backfield to take attempts away.
