Iowa State RB David Montgomery was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 73rd overall selection of the 2019 NFL Draft. With the pick, the Bears made David Montgomery the 4th running back selected in the draft.

David Montgomery spent three seasons at Iowa State. In those three seasons with the Cyclones, Montgomery appeared in 37 games, totaling 2,925 yards on 624 carries and he scored 26 touchdowns. In addition to his work on the ground, Monty hauled in 71 passes for another 582 yards. His best season came in 2018, posting 1,373 scrimmage yards on 279 touches and scoring 13 touchdowns.

David Montgomery had a decent rookie season in Chicago. He carried the ball 242 times for 889 yards and scored 5 times. He added another 185 yards and a touchdown on his 21 receptions. He finished his first season as RB24 with 170.4 PPR points and averaged 10.7 points per game.

In Montgomery’s second season, he took advantage of a Tarik Cohen torn ACL and increased workload. After the first nine weeks of the season, David Montgomery sat as the RB17 with an average of 12.3 PPR points a game. Monty was injured in Week 9, and as a result missed the Bears’ Week 10 matchup vs. divisional rival, Minnesota. He returned to the lineup in Week 12 after the Bears’ Week 11 bye and caught fire. Montgomery averaged 25.7 points a game the rest of the season and was the RB1 from Weeks 12-17. His red-hot finish catapulted him into a RB4 overall finish.

David Montgomery 2021 & Beyond

Entering the 2021 season, David Montgomery will have Tarik Cohen returning to join him in the Bears backfield as well as 2020 Covid-19 opt out, and former Kansas City Chiefs RB, Damien Williams. The likely reality, unfortunately, is we shouldn’t be expecting the same level of dominance Montgomery showed us last season in 2021. Cohen’s return should mean a dramatic dip in receiving production, and the addition of Williams will take some carries away, too.

Montgomery is still going to provide fantasy managers with a safe floor week in and week out. Regardless, we need to keep our 2021 David Montgomery expectations in check. Fantasy managers that roster Monty thinking that they’re going to get 2020 production are going to be disappointed. It’s safe to view Montgomery as a mid-range RB2.

Post 2021 is anyone’s best guess. 2022 will be the final year of his entry level contract. Teammate Tarik Cohen will have two years left on his deal after inking a three year extension in September of 2020. Damien Williams, who is playing the 2021 season on a 1-year deal, likely won’t be back. It’s also possible that the Bears have a new Head Coach and General Manager in place starting in 2022 as well. The Bears are looking a lot like a team that will spend some draft capital on a RB at the 2022 draft. Selling David Montgomery now might be the best move his dynasty managers can make.

Value

Contending teams that roster David Montgomery might want to hang on to this asset. The Bears’ offense arguably can’t be worse in 2021 than it was in 2020. The addition of first-round QB Justin Fields alone should change that. Age certainly isn’t a factor here, as Monty is only 23 years old. He has the talent to earn a second contract, and my guess is if the Bears management survives this season, he will get one.

I currently have him ranked 49th, and he is my 21st ranked RB in my 1QB start-up PPR rankings. The RotoHeat consensus rankings have Montgomery slightly higher than I do at 46th overall.

The DLF ADP of 46th is slightly high in my opinion, but it’s certainly not out of line. The uncertainty and the return of Cohen likely is why a back that was a top-4 back a season ago is this far down the ADP list. I have Montgomery slightly lower than the DLF ADP due to the fact that I buy into the uncertainty and the impact that Tarik Cohen will have on his receiving work. If you have yet to complete your rookie draft and are looking to sell David Montgomery for some draft picks, I would be setting the price at first round selection in the 1.07-1.10 range.
