Welcome back! Your Top 12 Running Back Plays for Week 9 are primed and ready for you. I’m sure you heard the big injury news from Week 8, Derrick Henry, the league leader in rushing yards, attempts and touchdowns is out for 6-10 weeks with a broken bone in his foot. I’m sure this hurt a lot of year round leagues. Tennessee has signed former NFL MVP Adrian Peterson to help alleviate the loss of Henry. With Tennessee playing the Rams this week Peterson is not a top running back play, but let’s take a look at who is!

Top 12 Running Back Plays for Week 9

Jonathan Taylor vs NYJ (TNF)

With the Derrick Henry news, Jonathan Taylor sits on top of the top 12 running back plays for Week 9. Taylor has 649 yards and 6 scores on the ground while adding 21 receptions for 265 yards and a score in the passing game. Indianapolis Colts will host the New York Jets on Thursday night this week. The Jets have allowed 806 yards and 12 touchdowns so far this season. The 12 scores allowed are the second most in the NFL. I would expect the Colts to use a run heavy attack against the Jets and make this a low scoring game.

Alvin Kamara vs ATL

Alvin Kamara has had an off year so far. He has rushed for 480 yards and 2 scores while adding 28 receptions for 256 yards and 4 touchdowns in the passing game. With the Saints losing quarterback Jameis Winston, Kamara could be utilized more in the running game against Atlanta’s run defense. The Falcons have allowed 876 rushing yards and 6 scores this season, as most opponents have attacked them through the passing game.

Aaron Jones at KC

Aaron Jones and the Packers will be without quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Sunday, and possibly Davante Adams as well. Both are now on the COVID list, Adams was placed on it last week but hasn’t been cleared yet. The Packers might need to rely on Aaron Jones more with Rodgers out agaonst the Chiefs. Jones has 7 total touchdowns on the season, along with 463 yards rushing and 237 receiving yards. The Chiefs dfense has allowed 974 rushing yards and 10 scores through the first 8 weeks of the season.

Nick Chubb at CIN

Nick Chubb is coming off his worst game of the season, with 61 rushing yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Chubb has 584 yards and 4 scores on the ground through 6 games. The Cleveland Browns will travel South to Cincinnati for a Week 9 AFC North divisional rivalry game. With Kareem Hunt out, Chubb should still see a bulk of the rushing attempts against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 9. The Bengals have given up just 755 yards and 7 touchdowns through 8 weeks.

Najee Harris vs CHI (MNF)

Staying with the AFC North, the Pittsburgh Steelers will host the Chicago Bears on Monday Night. Steelers have rookie running back of Najee Harris as their primary ball carrier. Harris has 479 yards and 3 scores through 7 games. Harris has also proved he can contribute to the passing game as well as he has added 37 receptions for 273 yards and 2 touchdowns. With the Steelers down Juju Smith-Schuster, Harris should see more targets in the passing game. The Bears have allowed 1000 yards and 8 scores on the ground.

Austin Ekeler at PHI

Austin Ekeler has had a good season, but not as great as we were expecting so far through 7 games this season. Ekeler has 420 yards and 5 scores rushing, he also has 33 receptions for 302 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air. The Chargers will head to Philadelphia to face the Eagles in Week 9. The Eagles have given up 988 yards and 9 touchdowns to opponents rushing. I would look for the Chargers to take advantage of the mismatch that Ekeler can provide against this Eagles defense, especially in the passing game.

Dalvin Cook at BALT

Dalvin Cook has missed a couple of games this season sue to injury. Cook has 444 yards and 2 touchdowns rushing in 5 games. He also has 12 receptions for 73 yards. The numbers are way below Cooks expected outcome. However, a trip to Baltimore and facing this Ravens defense might be what Cook needs to get back on track. Baltimore has allowed 603 yards and 8 touchdowns to opponents. Cook’s ability to contribute in the passing game could be how the Vikings will look to get him involved in the offense for Week 9.

Boston Scott vs LAC

Boston Scott hasn’t been used much this season. Fellow running back Miles Sanders was placed on Injured Reserve last week, clearing the way for carries for Boston Scott. Scott will split time with rookie Kenneth Gainwell, but Gainwell’s role in the offense didn’t change last week versus the Lions. Scott ended the contest with 12 carries for 60 yards and 2 scores. In Week 9, the Eagles will face the Chargers. The Chargers have allowed the second most rushing yards, and 9 touchdowns.

Darrel Williams vs GB

Top 12 Running Back Plays for Week 9 6

Darrel Williams had a good game on Monday night. Against the Giants, he had 49 yards rushing, and 6 receptions for 61 yards. Through 8 games, Williams has 230 yards rushing and 4 scores, he also added 19 receptions for 163 yards. The Chiefs will host the Green Bay Packers in Week 9. Defenses have been double teaming Kelce and Mahomes could look to dump off passes to Williams. Green Bay has allowed 920 yards and 8 touchdowns over so far this season.

Damien Harris at CAR

Damien Harris has ran for over 80 yards and at least 1 touchdown in each of the last 3 games for the Patriots. Harris has already surpassed his career high in touchdowns by scoring 6 touchdowns in 8 games. He is about to pass his career high for rushing yards in a season. Harris has 517 yards this season, his current best is 691 yards. Harris and the Patriots will face the Panthers in Week 9. Carolina has allowed 854 yards and 6 scores this season.

Myles Gaskin vs HOU

Myles Gaskin may have only 279 yards rushing, but he has a 4.2 yard per attempt average. He has also added 31 receptions for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns in the passing game. In Week 9 the Dolphins will face the Houston Texans. The Texans have allowed the most rushing yards (1185) and touchdowns (14) to opponents so far in 2021. The Dolphins should look to get Gaskin involved early against this bad run defense on Sunday.

Rex Burkhead at MIA

Rex Burkhead had only 7 touches on Sunday. That was still more than Phillip Lindsay and David Johnson had against the Rams. The Texans traded away Mark Ingram, making the running back situation a little mirky in Houston. However, looking at the touches, and the fact that only Burkhead had a reception, I would say that Houston is going to feature Burkhead moving forward. In Week 9 the Texans will head to Miami. Miami has allowed 926 yards and 9 scores so far in 2021. Houston could end up leading this game giving Burkhead more of an opportunity in the rushing game.
