NFL Week 9 IDP Waiver Wire Adds

Smack dab in the middle of the season means more bye weeks, and this year in particular, more injuries. After reading this, go look at your league’s highest scoring defensive players by position; it is a mess and gets weird quickly. Don’t worry though, we do the work so you don’t have to! Here are my NFL Week 9 IDP Waiver Wire Adds!

*Please note: Players listed are in no particular order for waiver preference.

Week 8 NFL Bye Weeks
Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, Philadelphia Eagles

3. Linebackers

CLEVELAND, OHIO – NOVEMBER 01: Tight end Harrison Bryant #88 of the Cleveland Browns fumbles the football as he is tackled by inside linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski #44 of the Las Vegas Raiders during the first half of the NFL game at FirstEnergy Stadium on November 01, 2020 in Cleveland, Ohio. TJ Edwards, Linebacker, Philadelphia Eagles
Ownership: FleaFlicker 6%, Yahoo 1%

With starting linebacker Nathan Gerry placed on IR, TJ Edwards stepped into 78% of the defensive snaps in Week 8 and responded with 6 solos, 7 assists, 1 TFL, 1 sack and 1 PD. The Eagles do have a Week 9 bye, but with Gerry out for the Week 10 and likely Week 11 games (against the Giants and Browns) Edwards will be in a great spot to help you out for a few games if you have room to stash him for a week.

Dre Greenlaw, Linebacker, San Francisco 49ers
Ownership: FleaFlicker 26%, Yahoo 2%

With Kwon Alexander traded to the New Orleans Saints, Greenlaw should be a full time starter the rest of the way. He has averaged 8.75 points the past four weeks, and 6 or more combined tackles each of those weeks. Greenlaw showed last year he could be productive when given the chance, and getting a known commodity a near guaranteed role going forward mid-season off the waiver wire is a great find.

Damien Wilson, Linebacker, Kansas City Chiefs
Ownership: FleaFlicker 24%, Yahoo 3%

Wilson for the season averages 6.56 points a game on about 62% playing time. The past four weeks in particular he has gotten between 6.50 and 8.50 points each week; that is the sort of consistency I like.Carolina gives up the 12th most points to opposing linebackers, and this game should be more competitive than the last game for the Chiefs, especially if Christian McCaffrey is back. Wilson should be a nice start this week if needed.

Nick Kwiatkoski, Linebacker, Las Vegas Raiders
Ownership: FleaFlicker 20%, Yahoo 13%

If you are lucky Nick may have been dropped by an owner in your league. He did little at the start of the season due to injuries, but the past two weeks he has had a 75% and 98% snap share, and has responded with 7 solos, 5 assists and a forced fumble. This is nothing amazing, and honestly not what I had hoped for this season for him, but with him back to getting significant playing time, and facing the Chargers (giving up the 4th most point to opposing linebackers) in Week 9, I like him for this week.

2. Defensive Backs

FOXBOROUGH, MA – DECEMBER 29: Eric Rowe #21 of the Miami Dolphins reacts after intercepting a pass for a touchdown during the second quarter of a game against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium on December 29, 2019 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. (Photo by Billie Weiss/Getty Images)

Kamren Curl, Safety, Washington Football Team
Ownership: Fleaflicker 2%, Yahoo 0%

Landon Collins was injured in Week 7 and is out for the year. Free agent Eric Reid rebuffed Washington’s overtures to join their practice squad and potentially (eventually) the team, so Curl looks to be the one to get first crack at starting in Collins’ spot. He had 3 solos in relief of Collins against the putrid Dallas passing game in Week 7, and gets turnover prone Daniel Jones in Week 9. The caveat with this one, make sure to monitor the situation as the week goes to make sure he is going to be the starter.

Eric Rowe, Safety, Miami Dolphins
Ownership: Fleaflicker 16%, Yahoo 2%

Over the past 3 games Rowe has averaged almost 93% of the defensive snaps for the Dolphins and 10 points a game. In Week 9 the Dolphins play Cardinals, who give up the 8th most points to opposing safeties this season. In a potentially high scoring game, Rowe makes a great add, and potentially could hold value for you the rest of the season if he continues with this level of playing time.

Adrian Amos, Safety, Green Bay Packers
Ownership: Fleaflicker 27%, Yahoo 11%

Amos has been playing at a high level the past two weeks, with 16.50 and 10.00 points respectively. Week 9 brings the San Francisco 49ers and their backup quarterback. Green Bay is sure to be in a foul mood after losing to the Minnesota Vikings this past week, and this is also a revenge game for Green Bay after the 49ers beat them to advance to the Super Bowl this past season.

This feels like a game where the Packers will take advantage of a banged-up 49ers defense, and the 49ers will have to throw more than they want to try and stay in the game. That combined with Amos’ recent high level of play gives me the feeling that he will have another good week this week.

Bryce Callahan, Cornerback, Denver Broncos
Ownership: Fleaflicker 8%, Yahoo 0%

Bryce is averaging a little over 7 points a game on the season, and in fact has only has one game under 7 points this season. He faces the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9 (13th most points given up to opposing cornerbacks) and can be picked-up for free in most leagues. He is a great add this week.

1. Defensive Linemen

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – NOVEMBER 12: Stephon Tuitt #91 of the Pittsburgh Steelers sacks Jacoby Brissett #7 of the Indianapolis Colts during the second half at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 12, 2017 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

Stephon Tuitt, Defensive End, Pittsburgh Steelers
Ownership: FleaFlicker 47%, Yahoo 7%

Tuitt has been hit and miss this year, with two games with 1.00 points or fewer, three between 7.00 and 9.00, and two 11 or above. I think this is another hit week, as the Steelers play the awful Dallas Cowboys, who also give up the 3rd most points to opposing defensive ends.

Everson Griffen, Defensive End, Detroit Lions
Ownership: FleaFlicker 25%, Yahoo 5%

Minnesota has not been great to opposing defensive ends this year (giving up the 7th fewest points this year to them). That said Trey Flowers is now out, and Griffen’s first game as a Lion is against the team he called home for 10 years, so I like him in this spot.

Marquis Haynes, Defensive End, Carolina Panthers
Ownership: FleaFlicker 1%, Yahoo 0%

This is your weekly shot in the dark, so to speak. Three of the past four weeks Haynes has had 8 or 9 points, strictly off of sacks and TFLs and a 40-50% defensive snap share. He is completely a big play hit or miss player. That said, he is getting a play or two a week for the most part lately and Chiefs give up the 9th most points to opposing defensive ends. If you are desperate, he is a fine dart throw.

Quinnen Williams, Defensive Tackle, New York Jets
Ownership: FleaFlicker 45%, Yahoo 6%

The #3 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft is not as deep of a dive as some we have had, but Williams has averaged 7.00 points the past four games and plays the Patriots, who give up the 2nd most points to opposing defensive tackles this year. A great player with a great game situation this week should equal a great start for you if you can grab him.

I’ve probably said it most weeks, but the Bengals give up a TON of points to opposing defensive lines, and the Bengals had more injuries to their offensive line this past week against the Rams. With the offensive line paying more attention to Harold Landry, Jadeveon Clowney and even Vic Beasley, I like Jones’ chances to get a TFL or a sack this week.
