Metchie III has the size and quickness that projects him to be used in the slot at the next level. He is an elite athlete that has exceptional start-stop ability and also great top-end speed. His route running and after-the-catch abilities made him a threat to score every time he had the ball in is hands in college.

In addition to his work as a pass catcher, Metchie showed to be a solid blocker who can take the lead blocking role on screens and bubble routes. His willingness to get involved in such plays bodes well for his use early on in his rookie season. Metchie III also has a solid frame for a WR, and that makes him a difficult tackle for defenders in the open field.

His athleticism combined with his ability to break tackles in the open field can make him a dynamic playmaker in the NFL. Metchie III tore his ACL in the 2021 SEC Championship Game, which is an injury that could potentially throw a wrench in his draft valuation if teams are concerned by the medical prognosis of his recovery.

The majority of the RotoHeat analysts see Metchie as a complimentary receiver, lacking true alpha traits. This is not necessarily a bad thing or a knock against him. All one has to do is look at the success slot receivers are having in New England, Detroit, and Las Vegas. Their best receivers are their slot receivers.

Metchie lacks the prototypical size of an alpha WR, as he is listed at 6’0″ and 195 lbs. If he is used outside in the X position, this is concerning, however if used in the slot (Z receiver), we see his size as a non-issue. The late season ACL tear is certainly a concern and one that likely takes this talented rookie receiver down teams’ draft boards this spring.

The RotoHeat team likes John Metchie, and many see a lot of the traits in him that made Jaylen Waddle so successful. The team is concerned about his injury but optimistic as well should he fall in the draft. Should Metchie fall into the third or fourth round, the corresponding impact on his fantasy value could create a scenario where John Metchie III may end up a steal in the 2022 NFL Draft as well as your annual rookie drafts.
