Favorite Late Tight Ends for 2022

In recent years, a phrase has been coined when it comes to tight ends in fantasy football. I don’t know who exactly coined the phrase, but it has been going around on some of the large fantasy sites, podcasts, live shows, etc.

The phrase is ”Great or Late Tight End”. The phrase details how you should go for either a great tight end, such as Travis Kelce, Mark Andrews, Kyle Pitts, and some consider Darren Waller as well as George Kittle in here as well. If you do not get any of these great tight ends, the idea is to wait until the late rounds to grab a tight end.

It feels like every season a new tight end breaks into the top12, which just goes to show that there is value to be found in the later rounds of fantasy football drafts. Last season, Dawson Knox and Hunter Henry were excellent late-round picks. The year before, Dalton Schultz, Hayden Hurst, Robert Tonyan, and Logan Thomas all smashed their draft value. Three years ago, Mark Andrews broke out and now he is a top2 tight end. The list goes on and on, proving that waiting, and then waiting some more at tight end can be very worthwhile.

This season should be no different, and I have three tight ends that I want to target in almost every single of my redraft leagues, both regular leagues, and best-ball leagues. These three tight ends have in fact already had at least one season as a TE1, but for different reasons, their ADP and draft stock have continued to fall, making them great bargains for your fantasy team on draft night.

So, without further ado, let’s look at my favorite late tight ends for 2022.

Noah Fant, Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks have anointed Geno Smith as their starting quarterback on what promises, on paper at least, to be one of the most lackluster offenses in the entire NFL. However, the weapons are not lacking. DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Noah Fant are all highly talented players.

Despite the bleak outlook for the Seahawks offense, Noah Fant is one of my favorite tight ends to target late. He is going in round 14 according to NFC ADP, but I am absolutely fine grabbing him in round 12.

Fant is hyperathletic and has a large frame. Both these attributes are great for a QB like Geno Smith who is going to operate behind what can only be described as a horrible offensive line. Fant’s size and athleticism are going to allow Smith to get the ball out quickly, and even off-target throws to Fant should be catchable for the former Iowa Hawkeye tight end.

The ability to run with the ball after the catch is also a strength of Fant’s allowing him to create more points for fantasy owners even on shorter routes. Fant has finished as a top12 tight end in each of the last two seasons, so he has the talent. At TE17 in ADP, I am willing to take the chance that he can do it again, in a field of tight ends, where only a handful is a guarantee to be a TE1.

Evan Engram is one of our Favorite Late Tight Ends for 2022

Evan Engram, Jacksonville Jaguars

Another tight end that NFC ADP has coming off the board in round 14 of drafts. Engram is one of my favorite late tight ends for a few reasons.

The new head coach in Jacksonville, Doug Pederson, utilized his tight ends a lot when he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. It remains to be seen if that is the case in Jacksonville, but chances are, he will. This could be great news for Engram, who also got paid by the Jags this offseason.

Another reason I like Engram is that he has already shown earlier in his career, that he can produce at a high level. It has been a while since the last time he did it, but a move to Florida and the Jaguars might be exactly what the doctor ordered for Engram to find his grove and break into the top12 again at the tight end position.

If Trevor Lawrence does in fact take the next step at quarterback and improves the entire Jaguars offense, Engram could be a beneficiary, and he could obliterate his draft stock for fantasy managers in 2022.

Robert Tonyan, Green Bay Packers

If I miss out on any of the two above, my next target is Robert Tonyan. Tonyan’s ADP is undrafted in 12man leagues with 15 rounds worth of picks. This means he is free (apart from a roster spot). Tonyan might not play to begin the season (Week 1 and maybe Week 2), but when he comes back, he could be Aaron Rodgers’ favorite target in the redzone. The two have had an obvious connection in seasons past, and that chemistry could be rekindled with no obvious wide receiver looking to take the step into the role left behind by Davante Adams.

What you are essentially looking at in a late-round tight end, is scoring upside, and Tonyan is going to have just that. He might not be getting a bunch of targets, but if healthy Tonyan could lead the team in redzone targets and receiving touchdowns when all is said and done. That makes him one of my favorite late tight ends to target in drafts for the 2022 NFL fantasy season.
