Fantasy Hot and Cold Players

Welcome to the 2021 Fantasy Hot and Cold Players series! To kick off the NFL season, this week’s fantasy hot and cold players will be based on which players benefitted from the offseason/preseason and which ones didn’t. Let’s dive in!

Hot Players

Gus Edwards

Gus Edwards has fallen into a great situation due to the unfortunate injury that JK Dobbins sustained in the preseason and the departure of Mark Ingram. Baltimore is a run heavy team, and Gus Edwards is going to benefit from the extra playing time and defenses focusing on Lamar Jackson first. Edwards is in for a heavy workload this season, and he is in an ideal Week 1 matchup against a lower than average Raiders defense.

Mac Jones

Most of us knew Mac becoming the starter was inevitable, but we didn’t expect it to happen before the season started. In his preseason performances, Jones showed he was more than capable of producing with just the 2nd string offense. He should be able to produce decent numbers when he gets the full arsenal at his disposal, but he does have a tough matchup against the stout Dolphins defense

CeeDee Lamb

CeeDee Lamb may not have done anything special this preseason, but if we remember how he performed the first five weeks last year with Dak Prescott under center, it should get fantasy owners excited. The young receiver was quickly becoming a favorite target and was on his way to a phenomenal rookie season. He still had a great year for a rookie receiver that was overshadowed by the performance of Justin Jefferson. We can quickly expect Dak to look CeeDee’s way early and often when the Cowboys face off against the defending Super Bowl champs Thursday night.

Cold Players

Ja’Marr Chase

The preseason woes of Ja’Marr Chase have not gone unnoticed. His drops and inconsistent practice performances have raised some concerns for fantasy owners. Ja’Marr has gone over a year without football and still has some rust to shake off. The concern is how long will it take to get back into form for the young, promising wideout. Luckily he already has a solid foundation with Joe Burrow with their time together at LSU, and as long as Burrow has faith in him we should see Ja’Marr get plenty of opportunities to get a rhythm going.

Brandin Cooks

The Houston Texans named Tyrod Taylor the starting QB for Week 1. Brandin Cooks has always had an elite QB throwing him the ball throughout his career and he has always been a reliable starter in our fantasy lineups. Tyrod has become a typical journeyman in the NFL, bouncing around to QB needy teams unable to secure himself a long-term spot. He makes up for his subpar passing with his ability to run the ball, which Brandin Cooks suffer from. Unless we see Tyrod be able to sustain production for Brandin Cooks, we can expect him to see a downtick in production compared to previous years.

Damien Harris

With the departure of Sony Michel, most people think this will heavily benefit Damien Harris, but the truth is we cannot trust any Patriot running back. Their rookie draft selection, Rhamondre Stevenson, has earned himself some valuable playing time as well. The fact of the matter is Bill Belichick’s RB rotation is almost impossible predict, and even though Damien Harris has secured himself the “starting” job in New England, his touches and production will be inconsistent.
