Diontae Johnson Fantasy Outlook 2021

In this article, we are going to cover the Diontae Johnson fantasy outlook 2021. We will share where we think he will rank amongst all wide receivers in 2021 and if you should you buy, hold or sell. Will Diontae Johnson be more or less valuable in 2022? Do we think he is going to be a league winner, weekly starter, flex play, spot starter, dark horse, or dart throw? Included are all of this as well as the personal opinions of the 14 people that participated from the RotoHeat staff.

Fantasy players everywhere have been debating which Pittsburgh WR is the one to own for 2021. I even recently wrote another article on the subject about a week ago. While I chose JuJu Smith-Shuster in that (dynasty) article, I still believe Diontae Johnson is a player to target for your teams in 2021. Our RotoHeat team generally agrees, although the answer is not definitive. Diontae Johnson in 2020 did post career numbers across the board in receptions (88), yards (923), and touchdowns (7), although he also led the league with 16 total drops. The biggest concern, however, is the unknown at quarterback with Big Ben now entering his age 39 season. Last, a final concern is what will the team’s target distribution look like with rookie RB Najee Harris in the mix after the Steelers selected him in the first round of this years NFL draft.

Diontae Johnson Fantasy Outlook 2021: What is his Weekly Playability?

Six of us were comfortable anointing Diontae Johnson as a weekly starter heading into 2021, including one who believes Diontae will be a “League Winner.” Four others still expect Diontae to be a weekly flex starter. One analyst specifically mentioned Najee Harris folding into the mix and worrying about what the offense will look like with another pass-catching option at Ben Roethlisberger‘s disposal. They listed Diontae as a “dark horse” candidate, with their reasoning essentially being that Diontae Johnson could take command of the offense, but there is some expected risk as well.

Diontae Johnson Fantasy Outlook 2021: More, Same or Less Valuable in the 2022 Dynasty Offseason?

One thing we want to cover for all the dynasty managers is whether or not we believe a player will gain value between now and this time next year. When it comes to Johnson, most expect him to be valued higher, or at worst, the same. Only 3 expect it to be lower. One analyst noted the biggest concern in their eyes was the current QB situation. They stated, “Big Ben is nothing like he once was and the future in Pittsburgh [at that position] is extremely cloudy.”

Diontae Johnson Fantasy Outlook 2021: Buy, Sell or Hold?

When it came down to buying and selling, six analysts voted for “buying” Diontae Johnson, and another four recommended to “hold”. This is what one had to say about Johnson: “We hear a lot about Diontae’s league-leading 16 drops. We tend not to hear much about Tyreek Hill, Alvin Kamara, and D.K. Metcalf dropping 11, 10, and 9 respectively. I want my WR to get targets and Johnson saw 144 them last season. He has top-12 upside and I see his value continuing to increase.”

Buy: 6
Hold: 4
Sell: 4

Outside of those ten, only 4 of the 14 analysts voted that Johnson was a “sell” heading into the 2021 season. The consensus of the ones who advocate selling essentially think that with no long-term outlook at quarterback it is risky to hold onto him past the 2021 season.

Diontae Johnson Fantasy Outlook 2021: Where Will He Rank vs. All Wide Receivers?

The team was very split over Diontae Johnson’s end-of-year finish as a whole. Some love the current opportunity, but others think the receiving corps is too crowded in Pittsburgh to feed so many pass-catching options.

When it was all said and done, the 14 analysts predicted where Johnson would finish:

High: WR12
Low: WR48

Even though one analyst had Johnson at WR48, the majority of our analysts had him hovering in the mid to late 20s. Three even had him top 18! This essentially means the vast majority of our analysts expect Diontae to finish in the WR2 range, but he could possibly end up as high as a top-12 WR in 2021.

Diontae Johnson Fantasy Outlook 2021: Conclusion

Overall, the RotoHeat team is very bullish on Diontae Johnson. While there are noted concerns, most of us expect him to have a very solid season. Diontae Johnson is generally viewed by our team as a solid investment for 2021.
