2021 NFL Week 5 IDP Waiver Wire Adds

We are now about a quarter of the way through the regular season. Whether you are 0-4 or 4-0 you still have time to make or break your season. As injuries and positional rotations increase, we are here to help you find those IDP waiver wire gems.

As a reminder, the balanced scoring system we are using when looking at these can be found here. Now, let’s get into this week’s waiver targets!

2021 NFL Week 5 IDP Waiver Wire Adds: Linebackers

2021 NFL Week 5 IDP Waiver Wire Adds: Linebackers – Azeez Al-Shaair

Derrick Barnes, Linebacker, Detroit Barnes
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 0%

Barnes is a pick-up for later in the year, but this is the time to get him. A 4th round rookie out of Purdue, he has had snap shares of 9%, 15%, 48% and 31% so far, but he is producing in limited time. The past two weeks he has had 3 solos and 1 assist, and 5 solos and 1 TFL. Jalen Reeves-Maybin (5th year veteran) has been playing over him the past two weeks but has not been impressing.

The Lions are going to have a lost year and going to start playing their younger players more to see what they have in them. Barnes’ has flashed in the pre-season and when he has played during the season. If you have room to grab him and stash for at the moment this year, I would.

Azeez Al-Shaair, Linebacker, San Francisco 49ers
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 1%

Through four weeks, Azeez has 17 solos, 15 assists, 3 TFL and 2 PD on a 91% snap share. That is second fiddle to Fred Warner’s 22 solos, 14 assists, 2 TFL and 1 PD, but still worthy of starting in leagues that start three linebackers or have a flex spot. With bye weeks coming up, Azeez is a guy to remember. The 49ers have a bye week in the first week of byes this year, Week 6, so he will be someone you can potentially start for guys on bye the rest of the year.

Pete Werner, Linebacker, New Orleans Saints
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 0%

The Saints have been searching, seemingly forever, for a linebacker to pair with Demario Davis and they may have finally found one. Werner has outplayed 2020 rookie Zach Baun and 2019 draft pick Kaden Ellis to earn more playing time, reaching 49% in Week 3 and 63% in Week 4.

In Week 4 he ended with 6 solos, 4 assists, and 1 TFL, and played more than Ellis and Baun combined. With how he is playing the Saints will have a hard time keeping him off the field, and he looks like a nice add for the rest of the year.

Drue Tranquill, Linebacker, Los Angeles Chargers
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 0%

Kenneth Murray was just placed on IR today and will miss at least three weeks. Drue had gone from 5% to 18% to 43% the first three weeks. Drue was eating into Murray’s playtime already and should see a big jump with Murray out. Drue had 3 solos and 1 TFL in Week 2, and then 6 solos, 2 assists, 1 TFL, and .5 sack in Week 3.

Kyzir White is a good add too as he was already getting more playing time but he is more highly owned. I would favor him over Drue, but Drue is more likely to be available. Both are fine adds.

2021 NFL Week 5 IDP Waiver Wire Adds: Defensive Backs

2021 NFL Week 5 IDP Waiver Wire Adds: Defensive Backs
2021 NFL Week 5 IDP Waiver Wire Adds: Defensive Backs – Daniel Sorensen

Daniel Sorensen, Safety, Kansas City Chiefs
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 9%

Sorensen is a name that most IDP veterans know, but he still does not get the respect he deserves (as seen by his ownership percentages). He is averaging about 6 solos and 2 assists a week and is DB15 on the year for us. Teams often have to get pass happy against the Chiefs to keep pace with them which creates a nice floor for their defensive backs. Add in a match-up against the Bills in Week 5, who are in the top 10 in points allowed to opposing safeties, and Soresen is a great add in leagues where he is being overlooked.

Deon Bush, Safety, Chicago Bears
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 0%

Deon has had 100% snap share the past two weeks with prior starter Tashaun Gipson out. In Week 3, Deon had 5 solos, 1 assist and 1 PD in Week 3, and had 6 solos and 3 assists in Week 4. It in unclear if Gipson will be back in Week 5 when they face the the Raiders (who are in the top 12 in points allowed to opposing safeties), but if Bush gets another start he is a worthwhile safety add in Week 5.

Anthony Brown, Cornerback, Dallas Cowboys
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 3%

A starter for the Cowboys who has played 100% of the snaps each of the four weeks so far, Brown has had at least 4 solos each week, and has had at least 1 PD in three of the four weeks. Week 5 brings the Giants who are in the top 10 in points allowed to opposing cornerbacks. It also doesn’t hurt that Brown plays opposite of breakout second year cornerback Trevon Diggs, who has 5 interceptions in 4 games. Brown is a nice CB floor play this week.

2021 NFL Week 5 IDP Waiver Wire Adds: Defensive Linemen

2021 NFL Week 5 IDP Waiver Wire Adds: Defensive Linemen
2021 NFL Week 5 IDP Waiver Wire Adds: Defensive Linemen – Sebastian Joseph-Day

Charles Harris, Defensive End, Detroit Lions
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 1%

Harris may be an EDGE, DL/LB or linebacker in your league, so make sure to check your league settings. Starting Detroit EDGE Romeo Okwara is lost for the year due to an Achilles tendon tear, and other starting EDGE Trey Flowers has missed two games in a row with shoulder and knee issues.

The past two weeks, Harris has had 78% and 90% snap shares and has three games in a row with at least 1 solo, 1 assist and 1 sack. Given the injuries and his high pass-rushing grades to start the year, Harris makes a nice deep league add, with potential to be start-able in shallow leagues if he continues to get to the quarterback.

Dante Fowler Jr, Defensive End, Atlanta Falcons
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 5%

Fowler has been one of two primary edge rushers for the Falcons this year, averaging about a 70% snap share. As always he has been a boom or bust type player who does not rack up the tackles. Week 1 was a dud, but the past three weeks he has had at least one sack or TFL. Week 5 brings the Jets who are in the top 10 in points allowed to opposing defensive ends. I wouldn’t add him in tackle heavy leagues, but if you need someone in a balanced scoring or big play league he is a nice waiver target.

Sebastian Joseph-Day, Defensive Tackle, Los Angeles Rams
Ownership: Sleeper 0%, Yahoo 2%

We do not cover nose tackles on here much, but playing with Aaron Donald has its benefits. Sitting at a 67% snap share after four weeks, which is best on the team’s defensive line after Aarond Donald, Sebastian has been getting tackles this year.

He has at least 1 solo and 1 assist each week, and two out of the four weeks he has had 6 or more solos. The Rams face the Seahawks in Week 5, who are in the top 12 in points allowed to opposing defensive tackles. He is an add in IL/DT required leagues only, but should give managers in those leagues an option to consider this week if streaming the position as many do.
