Now that week eight is almost in the books, we are at the unofficial midpoint mark of the 2019 NFL season.  With that we take a look at 5 surprising disappointments thus far this season.

1. QB – Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield took over the Cleveland Browns starting role after Tyrod Taylor was injured midway thru week 3 of the 2018 season.  He proceeded to finish the season as QB16.  From week 4-17 Baker was QB11.  There we high hopes that Baker in his second season would take the next step.  After 8 weeks in 2019, Baker sits at QB24.  Mayfield has a sub 60% completions percentage, 6 touchdown passes to go along with his 12 interceptions.

Honorable Mention – Mitchell Trubisky.  Trubisky sits at QB28 and is in danger of losing his starting job in Chicago.  Horrifically inaccurate all season long, it looks like the end of the line is nearing for Trubisky and his fantasy owners.

2. RB – Joe Mixon

Mixon came into this season as a top 12 running back in my rankings.  He currently sits as RB31 after 8 weeks.  It certainly doesn’t help that Mixon plays for one of the worst teams in the NFL, however it’s not like the Bengals were world beaters last season when Mixon finished the season as RB10.

Honorable Mention – Ronald Jones.  Jones enters week 9 as RB40 in PPR scoring.  I have never been that high on Jones, in fact I have been the opposite.  With that being said, averaging 8.61 PPR fantasy points as a “lead back”, in this league is disappointing even for RoJo.

3. WR – Odell Beckham

When OBJ was dealt to the Cleveland Browns on the first day of the 2019 season, his owners and OBJ himself were thrilled.  Finally Beckham had a quarterback that could take advantage of his all world talent.  Well if you look up a few spots, you can see where the problem lies.  Baker Mayfield it appears is not an upgrade.  OBJ is averaging 12.73 PR points a game and has 3 games with less than 10 points this season.   He currently is WR28 after 8 weeks.

Honorable Mention – Corey Davis.  Davis is WR52 on the season.  The WR that a lot of the Dynasty community are waiting on are still waiting.  A quarterback change in Tennessee may or may not aid Davis in his rise to relevance.  In two starts with Ryan Tannehill, Davis is averaging 11.45 PPR fantasy points a game.  Who is the real Corey Davis, the WR that put up 20 in Tannehill’s first start or the WR that put up 2.9 in his second.  In my opinion he is the WR that he is at WR52 and little else.

4. TE – O.J. Howard

O.J. Howard was the TE I expected to break out this season and challenge to become one of the elite in the league.  He was likely the third target in a Bruce Arians offense that would be throwing a lot.  Howard is an excellent talent that surly would take advantage of this excellent opportunity.  The reality for Howard; 18 targets, 13 catches, 176 yards and 0 touchdowns in 6 games this season.  He sits as TE39.

Honorable Mention –  Jared Cook.  Cook (who I was never of fan of) sits as TE24 thru 8 weeks (6 games for Cook).  He is averaging 7.3 PPR fantasy points a game.  In 2018 Jared Cook finished as TE5 with an average of 12.1 PPR points a game.

5. Rookie – Andy Isabella

A WR that I was super high on this season coming out has yet to make his mark.  He has been a healthy scratch in numerous of the Cardinals games this season and in the games he has appeared in he has 3 rushing attempts for 16 yards and 2 receptions for 8 yards.  Isabella sits at WR162 season to date.

Honorable Mention – Dwayne Haskins.  I am not sure this is even fair, Dwayne Haskins should not be playing at this stage of his career, let alone for the dumpster fire that is the Washington Redskins.  He has 3.90 fantasy points in parts of three contests this season.
